a Colombian-Jewish evening by and with Max Loeb and Dos Almas
A man enters the stage—and a world unfolds. With "babeln" we do not just listen to a concert; we encounter the unknown, which somehow feels strangely familiar. Max Loeb García takes the audience on a musical journey through the lives of his mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Following the paths of his ancestors, we experience the Babylonian coexistence of languages that shaped his family: German, Spanish, and Yiddish. We accompany Max to the Colombian villages where his German-Jewish family found a new home, and in doing so, we unexpectedly connect with our own histories.
In the compositions created especially for this programme, Max Loeb García organically blends the temperament, melancholy, and vibrant energy of both Jewish and Colombian cultures. This is music unlike anything heard before—yet, much like his storytelling, it carries a beautifully familiar resonance.
For this project, Max has gathered outstanding musicians, many of whom have been his longtime collaborators: Guido Richarts (double bass and vocals) and Stephan Salewski (percussion) drive a rhythmic foundation that keeps the audience captivated and moving. Martina Stoye unfolds near-spherical cascades on the accordion. Vinzenz Wieg performs with the soul of a faun; his virtuosity on the clarinet creates a unique space where childlike playfulness and ancient wisdom meet. Finally, the composer himself guides us through the chapters and moods of his life with his voice and classical guitar.
That this programme transcends a traditional concert is also thanks to director Christian R. Schmidt. He has seamlessly woven text and theatrical imagery into a compelling narrative arc, allowing the audience to wander through an entire spectrum of emotions. It is an evening that lingers long in the mind, leaving behind quiet imagery of places and people that remain with us like old friends.
